A concise list of items you should have to be in compliance with current rules.
Reporting Accidents & Injuries
To report an incident, call (800) 922-2689 or the Portland Oregon OSHA office (503) 229-5910. Reporting an incident DOES NOT assign fault, DOES NOT prove the violation of a workplace rule, and DOES NOT establish an employee’s eligibility for workers’ compensation or other benefits.
Report within 8 Hours
- Death of an employee (including from heart attacks or motor vehicle accidents that happen during the employee’s work shift)
- Catastrophe (death of 2+ employees, or 3+ employees admitted to a hospital or clinic due to the same incident)
Report within 24 Hours
- In-patient hospitalization
- Loss of an eye
- Amputation or avulsion (a body part is torn away from its normal place due to trauma) that results in bone or cartilage loss
Accident Scene
Do not disturb the scene of a fatality or catastrophe until OR-OSHA investigates the incident, unless a law enforcement officer tells you to or it is necessary to safely reach victims or prevent injuries.
OR-OSHA Consultation Services
Oregon OSHA consultation services are free and confidential.
Consultations ARE NOT enforcement inspections; consultants CANNOT issue citations for violation of OR-OSHA standards or provide enforcement officials with information about your participation, hazards, or business processes.
Consultants can provide safety hazard assessments, written program evaluation, and more. The goal of a consultation is to identify potential workplace hazards and make you aware of compliance issues so that you can correct them. Following a consultation, you will receive a report listing any hazards identified and recommendations for corrections.
Exemption from Enforcement Inspections
All consultation visits are considered “in progress” from 7 days prior to the opening meeting through 60 days after the report is issued (30 days for ALH sites). During this “in progress” period, if you receive an enforcement inspection, you can notify the enforcement officer of your consultation in progress and request a delay of the inspection until after the consultation is completed. Enforcement officers are required to delay the inspection, unless the issue is regarding Imminent Danger, Fatality/Catastrophe, Serious Accidents and Complaints.
Many workers’ compensation insurance companies offer accident prevention plan services to employers, which can include consultations. These services can also include surveys, recommendations, training programs, analysis of accident causes, industrial hygiene, and industrial health services. Contact your workers’ compensation insurance company for more information.
